First Aid Responsibilities for Employers

Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, all employers are legally required to ensure they provide ‘adequate and appropriate’ first aid equipment, facilities, and trained personnel to assist employees if they are injured or become ill at work.

This includes maintaining first aid kits, clearly defined procedures, and ensuring an appropriate number of staff are trained depending on the risk level and size of the workforce.

These regulations apply to all workplaces—regardless of size—including those with fewer than five employees and self-employed individuals. The level of provision should be determined by a thorough risk assessment.
